Response to “Facts about the National Debt"

In answer to the Lowell Sun “Letter to the Editor” entitled “Facts about the National Debt” on Thursday December 17, 2009, I submit the following chart.

national debt

I don’t know if the Massachusetts education system is at fault or if standard “Liberal” propaganda is just being repeated. Anyone that understands the workings of the federal government would know that the administration has little control of government spending and thus the deficit that becomes part of the national debt. The administration can request funds or can submit a budget that they would like to have passed, but it is the House of Representatives that is responsible for the appropriations (spending) bills. Once it has passed the House, the Senate must approve it before it goes to the President to be vetoed or signed into law.

From the chart, we see the rising debt during the Reagan/Bush years was the responsibility of the House controlled by the Democrats. During the Clinton administration the deficits were getting under control while the Republicans (remember Newt Gingrich) controlled the House. The first 2 years of the Bush (Little George) administration began to rise again under Republican control, I think due to the defense and homeland security buildup after 911. The 109th Congress (still Republican control) began to get the deficit under control while we conducted 2 overseas conflicts. The 110th Congress under full Democrat control began their typical spending habits and the present 112th Congress has totally thrown discretion to the wind trying to please the newly elected progressive president.

Some would argue that the 110th Congress passed the Tarp (at the urging of the Bush administration’s Treasury Secretary Paulson) to save the economy. The money was meant to buy up toxic sub prime mortgage assets to relieve the stress on the mortgage industry but was in fact diverted to bail out Paulson’s fat cat cronies and cover up the irresponsible actions of Senator Dodd and Representative Franks. As these funds are recovered they should be returned to the treasury to pay down the debt, but it looks like it will again be diverted to a slush fund for more irresponsible spending. Yes, I think that the original Stimulus and Omnibus spending bills were irresponsible as they have done little for the economy. The Stock Market turned and Unemployment started slowing in March before any of those funds even started to get out. Even now less than a third of the Stimulus has been spent. Most of it will be spent in 2010 to buy votes for the coming midterm election, hoping you will allow them to continue the irresponsible spending of our money. More taxing and deficit spending can only damage our fragile economy.

So we find ourselves with a totally irresponsible Democrat Congress throwing away our money to reward the Unions, powerful Wall Street bankers and supporters of their progressive cause.

Do your representatives really serve you or the party? Real change begins with Congress.
